Volkswagen ID. UNYX 08 enters production and opens pre-sales in China
The Volkswagen ID. UNYX 08 has entered series production at the Volkswagen Anhui plant in Hefei, China. The first units rolled off the line on March 13, 2026, and pre-sales opened on March 26 with prices starting at 239,900 yuan (approximately $34,760) and topping out at 299,900 yuan ($43,450).
The ID. UNYX 08 is the first production result of the joint development agreement between Volkswagen and XPENG, signed in 2023. The entire project, from contract to mass production, took 24 months. A second jointly developed model is expected to follow later in 2026.
Platform and positioning
The ID. UNYX 08 is built on XPENG's Edward platform, an 800-volt silicon carbide architecture that also underpins the XPENG G9. That makes the ID. UNYX 08 the first Volkswagen to use an 800V system and the first to be built on a platform sourced from a Chinese technology partner rather than from within the Volkswagen Group. While the two vehicles share the same platform, the ID. UNYX 08 is not a rebadged G9 — it is larger (5,000 mm vs approximately 4,890 mm) and has a distinct exterior and interior design developed by Volkswagen.
It is a full-size SUV, measuring 5,000 mm long, 1,954 mm wide, and 1,672 mm tall, with a 3,030 mm wheelbase. That puts it well above the ID.4 and ID.6 in size. Volkswagen positions it as a direct competitor to models like the Xiaomi YU7, Zeekr 7X, Avatr 07, and Li Auto i6 — all of which target the high-volume mid-to-large electric SUV segment in China.
The car uses a locally developed zonal electrical and electronic architecture called CEA (China Electronic Architecture), which Volkswagen describes as its first locally engineered E/E system.
Battery, charging, and drivetrain
Two CATL-supplied lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs are available: 82.4 kWh and 95 kWh. Volkswagen claims CLTC range of 630 km for the Standard Range variant and up to 730 km for the Long Range. No WLTP or EPA figures have been published, which is expected given the China-only positioning.
The 800V architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 315 kW. Volkswagen claims the car can add 150 km of range in five minutes under optimal conditions, and charge from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 20 minutes. AC charging is handled by an 11 kW onboard charger.
Three drivetrain variants are offered:
- ID. UNYX 08 RWD Standard Range — single rear motor, 230 kW (308 hp), 430 Nm, 82.4 kWh battery
- ID. UNYX 08 RWD Long Range — single rear motor, 230 kW (308 hp), 430 Nm, 95 kWh battery
- ID. UNYX 08 AWD Long Range — dual motor (140 kW front + 230 kW rear), 370 kW (496 hp) combined, 95 kWh battery
All variants use a permanent synchronous motor (PSM) on the rear axle. Top speed is 200 km/h across the range. The AWD variant does 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.
The suspension is a double wishbone setup at the front and five-link at the rear, both with dual-chamber air springs and electronically controlled damping (DCC). Front brakes are Brembo four-piston fixed calipers. Wheel options are 20 or 21 inches.
XPENG smart driving technology
The most significant technology transfer from XPENG is the ADAS system. The ID. UNYX 08 comes standard with XPENG's Vision-Language-Action 2.0 (VLA 2.0) smart driving system, making Volkswagen the first external customer for this technology.
The system runs on two XPENG-developed Turing chips delivering a combined 1,500 TOPS of computing power. The sensor suite includes 11 cameras, three millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. There is no LiDAR.
Capabilities include Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) for both highway and urban driving, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automatic lane changes, and automatic parking. Volkswagen classifies it as L2++ driver assistance. XPENG refers to the approach as "parking-to-parking" autonomy, covering the full journey from departure to destination.
Interior and technology
The cabin has a driver-focused layout with a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster and two linked 14.96-inch screens at 2.4K resolution for navigation and infotainment, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip. The steering wheel is a dual-spoke, double-D design with physical buttons and scroll wheels. The gear selector is mounted on the steering column.
Front seats are wrapped in Nappa leather and include heating, ventilation, and 10-point massage. The front passenger seat has 14-way electric adjustment and a motorized leg rest that reclines up to 120 degrees. Rear seats have electrically adjustable backrests with fold-down tray tables.
Additional comfort features include a 1.74-square-meter panoramic sunroof with 10-level smart dimming glass, two wireless phone chargers on the center tunnel, a 6.7-liter refrigerator, and a 20-speaker Unyx Sound audio system.
Trunk space is 766 liters with the rear seats up and 1,845 liters with them folded.
Design
The exterior features a closed front end with split headlights using LED matrix technology — an upgrade over the XPENG G9's standard LED units. The front light strip incorporates 400 individually controllable LEDs for animated daytime running light signatures. Door handles are flush-mounted. A roof spoiler runs along the rear. The overall shape follows the current Chinese market preference for large, upright electric SUVs with short overhangs relative to wheelbase.
Pricing and availability
Pre-sale pricing starts at 239,900 yuan ($34,760) and goes up to 299,900 yuan ($43,450). Early buyers who place a 99 yuan deposit receive a 2,000 yuan discount, a free home charging station, and a lifetime warranty. Full market launch is expected around the Beijing Auto Show in late April 2026.
The ID. UNYX 08 is developed and sold exclusively for the Chinese market. Volkswagen's official newsroom confirms it is not sold in Europe. There has been no indication that the model or its platform will be offered in other regions.
What this means for Volkswagen
The ID. UNYX 08 represents a strategic shift for Volkswagen in China. Rather than relying solely on its own MEB or upcoming SSP platforms, the company has sourced a complete 800V platform and advanced ADAS stack from a Chinese competitor. The result is a vehicle with specs and features that are directly competitive with domestic Chinese brands at a price point below the current ID.4 in some markets.
Volkswagen reclaimed the top-selling brand position in China during the first two months of 2026. The ID. UNYX 08 is part of a broader plan to launch over 20 new energy vehicles in China this year, with a target of 50 by 2030.
