EV Battery Warranty
An EV battery warranty usually combines several promises with different limits, so coverage for a failed cell or component is not necessarily the same as protection against gradual capacity loss.
The exact warranty booklet for the vehicle's market, model year, battery, and first-registration date is authoritative.

What a battery warranty actually covers
The phrase battery warranty can refer to four different forms of protection:
- General vehicle warranty: Covers manufacturing defects across the vehicle. It may include some high-voltage components, but it is often shorter than the advertised battery coverage.
- High-voltage battery defect warranty: Covers specified faults in the battery assembly during a stated time and distance.
- Battery-capacity guarantee: Provides a remedy if gradual capacity loss passes a defined threshold.
- Statutory consumer rights: Rights against the seller or another responsible party under local law, independent of the manufacturer's commercial warranty.
These layers can overlap, but one does not automatically replace another. The Norwegian Consumer Council uses the same central distinction: a battery warranty concerns faults in the battery, while a capacity guarantee promises a minimum remaining capacity. (Norwegian Consumer Council)
Defect coverage
A high-voltage battery is more than its energy-storing cells. Depending on the warranty definition, covered parts may include:
- Cells or cell groups
- Modules
- Busbars and internal connections
- Cell-monitoring electronics
- Voltage, current, and temperature sensors
- Contactors, fuses, and the battery junction box
- Internal cooling components
- Seals and high-voltage connectors
The Battery Management System, charging hardware, pumps, valves, and external cooling components may instead fall under the vehicle or electric-drivetrain warranty. A document that covers the "high-voltage battery" should therefore define which components belong to that assembly.
Defect coverage usually concerns a failure attributed to materials, production, or assembly. Normal ageing, accident damage, and faults caused by an excluded event are treated separately.
Capacity coverage
A capacity guarantee protects against excessive gradual loss of energy-storage capacity. A commonly published threshold is 70% during the warranty period, but the percentage alone is incomplete.
It does not normally promise that:
- The battery will stay close to its original capacity
- Every reduction in driving range will be covered
- Charging power and peak output cannot change
- A qualifying repair will restore the battery to 100%
- A replacement pack will be new
Gradual loss above the threshold is usually treated as expected ageing. How cells lose capacity and gain resistance is explained in Battery Degradation.
A battery can fail above the capacity threshold
Capacity and functionality are different.
A pack may still retain 85% of its original energy while one cell group has unusually high resistance or self-discharge. Its voltage can then fall too quickly during acceleration or rise too quickly while charging. The vehicle may limit power, stop charging early, show sudden changes in state of charge, log a battery fault, or shut down even though total capacity remains above 70%.
That problem may qualify under defect coverage but not under a capacity guarantee. Owners should ask which part of the warranty is being applied rather than treating an acceptable total-capacity result as proof that the battery has no fault.
How capacity guarantees work
A statement such as "70% for eight years" leaves several questions unanswered.
Time and distance
Battery warranties normally end when either the time or distance limit is reached, whichever comes first.
An eight-year/160,000 km warranty lasts only four years for a vehicle driven 40,000 km annually. Taxis, rental vehicles, ride-hailing cars, driving-school vehicles, and other commercial uses may also have separate limits.
Check when the clock started. Depending on the terms, it may be the date of first registration, delivery to the first customer, or first use.
Seventy percent of what?
The reference value may be:
- The battery's net or usable energy when new
- A model-specific certified value
- A value recorded when the individual vehicle was new
- A proprietary Battery Management System estimate
- A dashboard capacity indicator
These definitions are not equivalent. Gross capacity includes energy outside the permitted operating window, while usable capacity depends on the battery's upper and lower buffers.
Volkswagen UK's current terms refer to net battery energy content and a starting value assessed under its approved procedure. Nissan UK describes a separate State-of-Health guarantee for applicable models using the Leaf's displayed capacity segments as the trigger. (Volkswagen) (Nissan)
How is capacity measured?
Possible methods include:
- A manufacturer diagnostic routine
- Battery Management System State of Health
- A controlled charge or discharge test
- Energy measured across a defined state-of-charge window
- A dashboard capacity indicator
- A calculation using voltage, current, temperature, and operating history
The result depends on the definition and test conditions. Battery temperature, cell balance, calibration, power level, auxiliary consumption, and start and stop limits can all affect the measurement.
Many warranties require an authorised repairer to perform or approve the test. The Norwegian Consumer Council found differences between brands in the availability and cost of capacity testing, reinforcing why the owner should ask about the accepted procedure before paying for an independent report. Displayed range is not a capacity test
The vehicle's predicted range changes with temperature, recent consumption, speed, heating or air-conditioning, tyres, weather, route, and software. A lower range estimate at 100% does not prove that the battery has passed a warranty threshold.
Energy recorded by an AC or DC charger is also not the same as energy stored in the battery. Conversion losses, battery heating or cooling, and other vehicle loads affect the amount drawn from the charger.
State of Health is not a universal value
State of Health, or SOH, can describe remaining capacity, power capability, internal resistance, or a proprietary combination. A value exposed by a third-party diagnostic tool may not be the value used by the manufacturer's warranty procedure.
For a defensible capacity claim, ask for the measured result, its reference value, the method, battery temperature, and the exact pass/fail threshold.
What an approved claim may provide
An approved claim does not necessarily result in a new battery pack. Depending on the fault, pack design, and warranty terms, the remedy may be:
- Software calibration or a Battery Management System update
- Repair of a sensor, connector, or internal electrical fault
- Replacement of one or more modules
- Replacement of contactors or battery electronics
- Installation of a remanufactured module or battery
- Replacement of the complete pack

A capacity guarantee normally defines the minimum condition the manufacturer must restore, not an entitlement to the capacity of a new car. Volkswagen UK provides a clear example. Its standard BEV terms specify repair targets of at least:
- 78% during the first three years or 40,000 miles
- 74% during the first five years or 60,000 miles
- 70% during the first eight years or 100,000 miles
Volkswagen reserves the choice between repair and replacement, and a replacement battery remains covered for the unexpired part of the original battery warranty. (Volkswagen)
The written terms should answer:
- Who chooses the repair method?
- Can remanufactured parts be used?
- What minimum capacity must the repaired battery reach?
- Does the repair receive a new warranty or only the remaining original term?
- Are diagnosis, labour, transport, and a replacement vehicle included?
Why warranty terms differ
There is no single global EV battery warranty. Terms can change with:
- Country and importer
- Model and battery version
- Model year or production date
- Private or commercial use
- New, used, or parallel-imported status
- A service-activated extension
- Changes in local regulation or incentive requirements
The following examples illustrate the differences; they are not a global ranking.
Tesla, United Kingdom
Tesla's UK Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty runs for eight years, but its distance limit depends on the vehicle. The current page lists 100,000 miles for Model 3 and Model Y RWD versions, 120,000 miles for the listed higher-range and Performance Model 3/Y versions, and 150,000 miles for Model S and Model X. Each includes a minimum 70% battery-capacity retention statement. Tesla directs owners to the warranty supplied with the vehicle for authoritative terms. (Tesla)
Volkswagen, United Kingdom
Volkswagen UK separately publishes eight years or 100,000 miles of BEV battery manufacturing-defect coverage and an eight-year/100,000-mile guarantee against excessive loss of net battery energy content. Its terms also specify exclusions, repair targets, and who chooses the remedy. (Volkswagen)
Nissan, United Kingdom
Nissan UK's current page shows why model year matters. It lists five years or 60,000 miles for the pre-MY22 Leaf battery, but eight years or 100,000 miles for the MY22 Leaf, Ariya, New Micra, and New Leaf. The separate State-of-Health guarantee protects applicable batteries against falling below the stated capacity-gauge threshold. (Nissan)
Hyundai, Europe
Hyundai Motor Europe states that high-voltage batteries in its electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell vehicles are covered for eight years or 160,000 km. For battery-electric vehicles, the published coverage includes repairs needed to return battery SOH to at least 70% of its original state. Hyundai also warns that national and production-date terms can differ. (Hyundai)
Toyota, Norway
Toyota Norway provides an example of service-activated protection. Its Relax programme can extend battery defect and capacity protection to ten years or 1,000,000 km, whichever comes first, with at least 70% of original capacity, subject to programme conditions and authorised battery health checks. This should not be confused with an unconditional ten-year warranty in every market. (Toyota Norway)
Transferability and imported vehicles
Many original battery warranties follow the vehicle, but this is not universal. Some capacity guarantees or service-activated programmes are restricted by ownership, market, maintenance history, or registration status.
A parallel-imported EV may have terms from its original market but limited support in the country where it is now registered. Parts, software, diagnostic procedures, and authorised coverage can also differ.
For a used or imported EV, ask the local manufacturer or authorised network to confirm in writing, using the VIN:
- The original warranty market
- Start date and distance limit
- Remaining defect coverage
- Remaining capacity guarantee
- Transferability
- Required service or battery checks
- Previous battery repairs or replacements
- Any open recalls or service campaigns
Exclusions and owner obligations
Battery warranties commonly exclude failures caused by events outside the manufacturer's responsibility. Exact wording varies, but examples can include:
- Collision or underbody impact
- Flood, fire, or excessive water exposure
- Incorrect lifting, recovery, or towing
- Unauthorised opening, removal, or repair of the battery
- Unapproved high-voltage hardware or software modification
- Use outside the operating and charging instructions
- Damage caused by incompatible external equipment
- Racing, deliberate misuse, or specified commercial use
- Failure to complete required updates or battery checks
Volkswagen UK, for example, excludes degradation caused by unauthorised battery work, use outside the owner's-manual instructions, open fire, and excessive water exposure. (Volkswagen)
Most EV batteries are mounted beneath the passenger compartment. Damage to the enclosure, cooling plate, seals, or high-voltage isolation after an impact may be an insurance matter rather than a manufacturing-defect claim. A written technical diagnosis is important when a visible impact and a later battery fault may be connected.
Owners should keep:
- The warranty booklet supplied with the vehicle
- Sales and first-registration documents
- Service invoices and battery-check reports
- Recall and software-update records
- Documentation for any battery repair
Missing maintenance does not have identical consequences in every market. The safest approach is to follow the prescribed programme and retain evidence. If a claim is rejected, ask the manufacturer to identify the exact condition, exclusion, and claimed connection to the failure.
Making a claim and checking a used EV
Battery symptoms can be intermittent and may disappear before the workshop inspection. Record:
- Date, mileage, and displayed state of charge
- Warning messages and diagnostic codes
- Charging behaviour and unexpected stopping points
- Sudden state-of-charge changes
- Power or regenerative-braking limits
- Ambient and battery temperature when available
- Photos, video, and charging records
Ask the workshop for a written diagnosis identifying:
- The failed or suspected component
- Whether the issue is classified as a defect or degradation
- Cell-voltage spread or other relevant measurements
- Measured capacity or State of Health
- Test method and reference value
- The warranty clause being applied
- The proposed repair and post-repair target
If the claim is rejected, request the reason and evidence in writing. A capacity reading above the threshold does not by itself answer a claim about a failed cell, contactor, sensor, or cooling component.
Warranty and statutory rights
A commercial warranty is a promise from a manufacturer, importer, or seller. Statutory consumer rights are created by law and may provide a separate route after a warranty rejection.
For example, EU rules provide a minimum two-year legal guarantee against the seller for faulty goods and state that a commercial guarantee cannot reduce those rights; national rules may provide additional protection. Purchases from private individuals are treated differently. (Your Europe)

Used-EV checklist
Before buying, verify:
- Exact model year, battery variant, and first-registration date
- Current mileage and expected distance before the limit expires
- Separate terms for defects and capacity loss
- Capacity threshold and accepted test method
- Whether diagnosis is free
- Transferability and import restrictions
- Service, software, and battery-check requirements
- Commercial-use exclusions
- Previous module or pack replacement
- Remaining coverage after an earlier repair
A listing that says "battery warranty until 2032" is incomplete. It should state what is covered until 2032, the distance limit, the capacity threshold, and the remedy.
The strongest warranty is not necessarily the one with the longest headline period. Clear component coverage, a defined capacity test, practical repair options, transferability, and an understandable claim process can matter just as much.
