Range Added per Charging Minute

Range added per charging minute is an estimate of the driving distance enabled by the energy an EV receives during one minute of charging.

How the figure is calculated

The calculation combines energy added per minute with an assumed vehicle consumption. At a steady 120 kW, a charger supplies 2 kWh per minute before losses; if the chosen consumption is 20 kWh/100 km, that energy corresponds to 10 km of theoretical range before adjusting the measurement boundary and losses.

The rate is not constant during a DC fast-charging session. Charging power changes with state of charge, battery temperature, voltage, charger capability, and thermal limits. A value based on peak power can therefore be much higher than the average over a useful interval such as 10–80 percent.

The range unit also depends on the consumption basis: rated-cycle range, motorway consumption, winter consumption, and recent driving can produce different distance values from the same added energy. Useful comparisons must state the charging interval, time boundary, energy boundary, and range or consumption assumption.
