Peak and Continuous Power
Peak and continuous power describe different operating limits of an electric drive. Neither figure is meaningful without the measurement boundary and test conditions.
Peak power
Peak power is the highest output permitted under specified conditions. It may depend on battery state of charge, voltage, component temperature, cooling performance, vehicle speed, and a short time limit. A peak figure does not show how long the output can be repeated or sustained.
Continuous power
Continuous power is the output that a motor or drive unit can maintain when heat generation and heat removal have reached a defined steady condition. The result depends on coolant temperature, flow, ambient conditions, speed, and the chosen test procedure. It is not automatically the same as maximum 30-minute power, which is a regulated 30-minute rating.
Why the distinction matters
Two EVs with similar motor power can behave differently during repeated acceleration, towing, climbing, or sustained high speed. A useful comparison therefore identifies the tested component, duration, starting temperatures, cooling state, and whether the number is measured at the motor shaft, drive-unit output, or wheels.
