Lane Keeping Assist

Lane Keeping Assist applies a limited steering or braking correction when the vehicle is about to leave its lane unintentionally. It is different from lane departure warning, continuous lane centering and emergency lane keeping.

Sensors used

Lane keeping assist primarily uses forward Cameras for lane or road-edge geometry. Steering angle, wheel speed, yaw and lateral acceleration from Positioning and Vehicle Motion provide feedback for the corrective steering input.

The function's usable road types depend on what geometry it can observe and how it represents uncertainty. Sensor Fusion covers combined estimates, while Calibration, Cleaning and Sensor Health covers camera obstruction and alignment.

Corrective rather than continuous steering

LKA monitors the vehicle’s position relative to visible lane boundaries. When it predicts an unintentional departure, it can apply steering torque or brake individual wheels to guide the vehicle away from the boundary. The correction is temporary; the driver remains responsible for lane position.

Lane centering instead provides sustained steering support near the middle of a lane. Emergency Lane Keeping is a default-on safety function intended for more critical departures, such as crossing a solid line, leaving the road or moving toward adjacent traffic. Product names frequently blur these distinctions.

Detection and driver intent

A forward camera is the usual source for lane markings and road-edge information. The system also considers steering angle, vehicle speed, yaw motion and use of the direction indicator. A deliberate steering input or turn signal can suppress intervention, although exact logic varies.

LKA may not recognize every lane boundary. Faded markings, temporary roadworks, snow, standing water, glare, sharp curves and camera blockage can reduce availability. The absence of a warning does not establish that the lane is safe to leave.

Driver interaction

The correction should be strong enough to help without preventing the driver from avoiding an obstacle or following a temporary traffic layout. The driver must be able to override it. Repeated false or poorly timed interventions can cause drivers to disable the function, so accuracy and clear status information matter.

LKA is normally SAE Level 0 when it intervenes only during a potential departure. Sustained lane centering is Level 1 lateral assistance; combining it with adaptive cruise control is normally supervised Level 2. See Level 2 vs Level 3 for the driver-role boundary.

What buyers should check

  • whether the function is warning-only, corrective LKA or continuous centering;
  • marked-lane and road-edge coverage;
  • operating speed and curve limits;
  • behavior around roadworks and merging lanes;
  • intervention through steering, braking or both;
  • driver override and warning settings; and
  • how unavailability is displayed.
