Matrix LED Headlights
Matrix LED headlights use multiple independently controlled LEDs or LED groups to shape the headlamp beam electronically.
How the beam is controlled
A forward camera and other vehicle inputs provide information about traffic and driving conditions. The controller can then dim or switch off selected light segments around detected oncoming or preceding vehicles while keeping more of the high beam active elsewhere. The number of segments determines how finely the lamp can divide the beam, but it does not establish how far or evenly the road is illuminated. Optical design, detection accuracy, response time, headlamp aim, automatic levelling, and calibration all affect the result.
Important distinction
Matrix LED describes a segmented LED architecture and its electronic control. Adaptive driving beam (ADB) describes an approved driving-beam function that adapts its pattern around other road users. UNECE: UN Regulation No. 149 — road-illumination devices A matrix lamp can therefore use addressable segments without providing the same ADB behavior in every vehicle configuration.
If the camera is blocked or the system reports a fault, the adaptive function may be limited or disabled even though basic low beam remains available.
