Megawatt Charging System (MCS)
Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is a standardized high-current DC charging connection system developed primarily for heavy-duty electric vehicles and other applications that need much more energy per stop than a typical passenger car.
A complete connection system
MCS is more than a charger with a megawatt-scale name. It defines a dedicated vehicle connector and inlet, communication between the vehicle and charging equipment, and safety and control requirements for very high currents. The system is intended for vehicles such as electric trucks and buses, where charging time can directly affect route planning and commercial operation.
The external charger converts grid power to controlled DC and supplies it directly to the vehicle's high-voltage battery system. Because high current generates heat in cables, contacts, and connectors, practical MCS installations may use temperature monitoring and actively cooled charging cables. The charger and vehicle continuously coordinate safe operating limits.
Rated power versus delivered power
MCS does not mean that every charging session will run above one megawatt. It is the name of a standardized connection system, not a generic label for any charger above a particular power threshold.
Actual power is limited by the weakest part of the charging chain: the site's grid connection, charger cabinet, cable and connector, vehicle inlet, battery voltage, battery temperature, state of charge, and the vehicle's charging curve. A station's maximum rating therefore does not describe the power every compatible vehicle can accept or how long peak power can be maintained.
MCS belongs to the wider family of DC fast charging systems, but its physical interface differs from passenger-car systems such as CCS and CHAdeMO.
