Charging-Stop Planning
Charging-stop planning is the selection of where to charge, when to stop, and how much energy to add during an EV trip.
What makes a stop useful
A planner starts with expected energy use, starting state of charge, desired arrival reserve, and charger coverage along the route. It then considers connector compatibility, expected charging power and charge curve, battery temperature, site availability, detour time, amenities, queues, and alternatives if a charger cannot be used.
Charging to a very high state of charge is not always the quickest plan because many EVs reduce charging power as the battery fills. Several shorter sessions in a faster part of the charge curve can reduce charging time, but extra exits, setup time, or unreliable sites can reverse that advantage. The best stop pattern depends on the exact vehicle, route, weather, and priorities.
A plan should state the intended arrival and departure state of charge at each stop and keep a suitable reserve. It is a forecast, so actual consumption and delivered charging power should trigger recalculation during the trip.
