Vehicle Dimensions and Mass
Vehicle dimensions and mass describe a vehicle’s physical envelope, axle geometry, clearances, unladen condition, load capacity, and rated maximum mass. The numbers are useful only when their measurement definitions and vehicle configuration are known.
Exterior and chassis dimensions
Vehicle length, width, and height define the outer envelope, but published figures may exclude specified items such as mirrors, antennas, or removable equipment. Wheelbase is the longitudinal distance between axle centres, while track width describes the lateral spacing of the wheels on an axle. These measurements affect packaging and vehicle proportions but do not, by themselves, establish cabin room or handling quality.
Ground clearance, approach angle, departure angle, and breakover angle describe different underbody and obstacle-clearance limits. Turning circle describes the space required to turn, but manufacturers may quote a kerb-to-kerb or wall-to-wall diameter, so apparently similar values are not always directly comparable.
Mass and load ratings
Curb weight, unladen mass, and mass in running order are related terms rather than universal synonyms. Depending on the applicable rule, the stated value may include standard equipment, operating fluids, a nominal driver, optional equipment, or some combination of these. The exact definition must remain attached to the number.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), or the corresponding technically permissible maximum laden mass, is a manufacturer-assigned limit rather than the vehicle’s current scale weight. Payload is the allowable contribution from occupants, cargo, accessories, and sometimes coupling load within that limit. A simple subtraction can be misleading if the curb-weight and rated-mass figures use incompatible configurations.
What EV architecture changes
An EV battery pack contributes substantial mass and often occupies space in the floor. A dedicated EV platform can use that placement to support a long wheelbase and short overhangs, while a multi-energy platform must accommodate more than one propulsion layout. Neither architecture guarantees a particular payload, turning circle, ground clearance, or interior volume; those remain vehicle-specific engineering outcomes.
Comparing specifications
Compare the same variant, market, wheel and tyre package, seating configuration, and measurement standard. Check whether a towing figure is braked or unbraked, whether towball download counts against payload, whether roof load is a dynamic driving limit, and which luggage-volume method was used. These boundaries matter more than small differences between headline values.
