Lane Departure Warning
Lane Departure Warning alerts the driver when the vehicle appears to drift across a lane boundary without an intentional lane-change signal.
Sensors used
Lane departure warning primarily uses forward Cameras to estimate lane markings or road edges. Steering angle, indicator state, wheel speed and yaw information from Positioning and Vehicle Motion help decide whether the departure is intentional and whether a warning is relevant.
Worn markings, glare, precipitation and camera misalignment can reduce confidence. Sensor Fusion covers combined lane evidence, while Calibration, Cleaning and Sensor Health covers obstruction and alignment.
How it detects departure
A forward camera identifies lane markings and sometimes road edges. The controller estimates the vehicle's lateral position and predicts whether a tire will cross the boundary.
Warnings may be visual, audible or haptic through the steering wheel or seat. The system does not continuously steer the vehicle.
Warning versus steering
Related lane functions should be separated:
- lane-departure warning alerts only;
- lane-keeping assist briefly corrects an unintended departure;
- emergency lane keeping intervenes when departure creates an imminent safety risk;
- lane-centering assist continuously controls position while engaged.
Because LDW is a momentary warning rather than sustained control, it remains SAE Level 0.
Intentional maneuvers
Using the turn signal normally suppresses the warning because the lane departure appears intentional. The driver must still check mirrors and the blind spot; the indicator does not make the maneuver safe.
Some systems also suppress warnings during strong steering, braking, low speed or when markings are uncertain. The behavior can therefore change between roads even when the dashboard shows the function as enabled.
Detection limits
Performance can fall with:
- faded, temporary or conflicting markings;
- snow, standing water, glare or darkness;
- sharp curves, hill crests and narrow lanes;
- a dirty or fogged windscreen in front of the camera;
- road edges that do not resemble standard markings.
The system may warn at repaired seams or old construction lines. Repeated nuisance warnings can encourage drivers to disable it, so timing and human-machine interface are important parts of safety.
Regulation and testing
The EU General Safety Regulation distinguishes lane-departure warning from emergency lane-keeping systems and includes lane-support technologies in its safety framework. NHTSA likewise lists LDW separately from lane-keeping assistance.
Consumer testing should report warning timing, marking types, road-edge support and whether the vehicle merely warns or also steers.
