Automatic Emergency Steering

Automatic Emergency Steering uses a short steering intervention to avoid or reduce an imminent collision when braking alone may be insufficient and an escape path appears usable.

Sensors used

Automatic emergency steering needs road and lane geometry from Cameras, obstacle tracks commonly derived from cameras and Radar, and sometimes 3D geometry from Lidar. Steering angle, wheel speed, yaw and lateral acceleration from Positioning and Vehicle Motion are essential for controlling the evasive path.

The system must verify that the escape corridor is safer than continued braking. Sensor Fusion covers object and free-space association; Calibration, Cleaning and Sensor Health covers sensor alignment and degradation.

From warning to steering

The system predicts the path of the vehicle and surrounding road users. Cameras, radar and sometimes lidar contribute object, lane and free-space information. Steering is considered only when software determines that:

  • collision risk is urgent;
  • braking may not prevent the impact;
  • the adjacent path has enough space;
  • the maneuver will not create a greater conflict;
  • vehicle speed and stability remain within supported limits.

Some systems initiate steering. Others only add steering support after the driver begins an evasive input. Those are materially different capabilities even when both are marketed as emergency steering.

Braking and steering together

Emergency steering does not replace automatic emergency braking. Braking reduces the distance and energy involved, while steering changes the path. A combined controller may brake before, during or after the lateral maneuver and use electronic stability control to keep the vehicle controllable.

The safest response depends on road width, surrounding traffic, target motion, tire grip and the driver's own input. A vacant adjacent lane at detection time may cease to be vacant a fraction of a second later.

Momentary intervention, not automated driving

A short collision-avoidance input remains momentary assistance at SAE Level 0. It does not continuously perform lateral control and does not authorize the driver to stop monitoring.

When the same vehicle also provides sustained lane centering and adaptive cruise control, those functions can form Level 2. The emergency intervention should still be evaluated separately.

Limits and false interventions

Road-edge ambiguity, construction markings, narrow lanes, sensor blockage and unusual object shapes can prevent an intervention or trigger an unwanted one. The driver must be able to override the steering input with deliberate force.

Testing should identify the target, approach angle, speed, available escape width and whether the driver initiated the maneuver. A result described only as "collision avoided" conceals the conditions under which the system succeeded.
