Disc Brake

A disc brake slows a wheel by using a caliper to press friction pads against both sides of a rotating disc, or rotor.

Characteristics in an EV

The exposed disc can reject heat effectively and provides consistent response for repeated braking. Calipers may be fixed or floating, and discs can be solid, ventilated, coated, or made from other materials for demanding applications.

Ventilated discs use internal passages to increase cooling area and airflow. Solid discs are simpler and may be adequate where thermal loads are lower.

Because regenerative braking reduces routine friction use, iron discs can spend long periods wet or lightly loaded and may corrode. EV software may occasionally apply the brakes or alter blending, but inspection remains important. Disc brakes are one form of friction braking; not every EV axle must use them. braking systems
