Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging (V2V)

Vehicle-to-vehicle charging transfers energy from a donor vehicle to a receiving EV through a supported electrical system.

What V2V charging means

Vehicle-to-vehicle charging (V2V) transfers electrical energy from one vehicle to another. In an EV context, a donor vehicle exports power and a receiving EV uses compatible equipment to accept that energy into its traction battery.

The transfer may use dedicated bidirectional charging functions and an external adapter or conversion device. Simply connecting two charging cables is not sufficient: voltage, current, communication, electrical isolation, protection, connector compatibility, and control of both vehicles must all be supported by the complete system.

Use and limitations

V2V can provide emergency energy, roadside assistance, or energy sharing where normal charging infrastructure is unavailable. It is usually less convenient and less efficient than charging the receiving vehicle directly from suitable infrastructure because conversion losses and the donor vehicle's own reserve must be considered.

Manufacturer implementations can be product-specific. Lucid, for example, describes RangeXchange as a supported vehicle-to-vehicle charging feature using its bidirectional charging capability and dedicated hardware. V2V is not the same as vehicle-to-load output, which powers external appliances, or vehicle-to-grid operation, which exchanges energy with an electrical grid.
