Ford Fathom - what do we know

Ford has given its cheapest electric vehicle a name and a price, and held back almost everything else. The Fathom is a midsize electric pickup starting at $28,350, and it is the first vehicle to use Ford's Universal EV platform.

What has been confirmed

Ford announced the name on 6 August 2026 without releasing a single photograph of the truck. The confirmed points are short:

  • Base MSRP of $28,350, plus a $1,595 destination and delivery charge, for $29,945 as delivered
  • Five seats, a pickup bed and a front trunk
  • More passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, according to Ford's own comparison
  • BlueCruise capability on every Fathom, not just upper trims
  • Bidirectional power export
  • A large touchscreen with Apple Maps built in, plus Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a digital key and remote control through the Ford app
  • Assembly at Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky
  • Full reveal and pre-orders in early 2027, first customer deliveries later the same year

The name comes from the nautical unit, originally the span of a pair of outstretched arms and later a measure of water depth. Ford picked it out of several hundred candidates for the second meaning the word picked up along the way, to understand something fully.

Platform and size

The Fathom is the first product of the Universal EV platform, which Ford announced in August 2025 alongside a $2 billion conversion of the Louisville plant. The engineering was done at Ford's Electric Vehicle Development Center in Long Beach, California, a deliberately small team set up to work outside the company's normal vehicle development process.

The more interesting part of the platform is how the truck gets built. Ford is using large unicastings front and rear, and an assembly method it calls the assembly tree, where three sub-assemblies are built in parallel and joined late. Ford's numbers for that process: 20 percent fewer parts, 25 percent fewer fasteners, 40 percent fewer workstations and 15 percent faster assembly than a conventional line. The wiring harness is more than 4,000 feet shorter and 22 pounds lighter than the one in Ford's first electric SUV.

None of that tells you how big the truck is. Ford has not published length, wheelbase, bed length or payload. The RAV4 comparison and the "midsize" label point to something in Maverick territory rather than Ranger territory, but that is an inference from Ford's marketing language, not a confirmed dimension. Ford has also claimed 15 percent better aerodynamic efficiency than any pickup currently on sale, helped by mirrors that are 20 percent smaller, airflow management around the tire wake, and optional aero wheel covers. A truck designed that hard around drag is unlikely to have the upright face of a conventional pickup.

Battery, charging and drivetrain

This is where the confirmed detail runs out fastest, though the platform work gives a clearer picture than the launch announcement does.

The battery is LFP, using prismatic cells in a cell-to-pack layout with no modules, and the pack is structural. Ford designed the platform around LFP from the start rather than adapting a nickel-based pack, which set the weight and packaging targets. The cells come from BlueOval Battery Park Michigan in Marshall, where production started in June 2026.

The architecture is 400 volts, with a 48-volt low-voltage system alongside it. Alan Clarke, Ford's executive director of advanced EV development, has said the 800-volt option was considered and dropped on cost grounds. The charge port is NACS, on the rear left, with access to Tesla's Supercharger network.

Ford has said the platform supports both rear- and all-wheel drive, and has quoted a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds for the truck without saying which drivetrain that applies to. The only battery mentioned in the launch announcement is a standard-range pack, and only for the $28,350 trim.

What is missing matters more than what is there. There is no capacity figure, no range estimate, no peak DC charging power and no charge curve. A 400-volt LFP pack in a cost-focused truck is not going to charge like an 800-volt performance EV, and the useful question, when Ford eventually answers it, will be how flat the curve stays rather than what the peak number says. LFP also brings the practical upside of routine charging to 100 percent without the calendar-life penalty of a nickel chemistry.

Interior and technology

Ford has described the interface rather than shown it. There is a large high-resolution touchscreen with Apple Maps as the built-in navigation, which is an unusual choice for a factory-fitted system. CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, though the Fathom does not support CarPlay Ultra.

Every Fathom is BlueCruise capable, which is not the same as every Fathom arriving with BlueCruise active. Ford sells the hands-free function as a subscription, so the confirmed point is that the hardware is fitted across the range.

Bidirectional power is confirmed, but Ford has not said what the export limit is or whether home backup needs additional equipment, as it does on the F-150 Lightning.

Launch timing and expected pricing

The pricing announced so far covers one configuration: the standard-range base trim at $28,350 before the $1,595 destination charge. Ford has not published a trim ladder, and has not priced the longer-range pack that the "standard range" label implies exists.

The reveal and pre-orders come in early 2027, with deliveries later that year. That is a long gap between naming a vehicle and showing it, and it puts the Fathom into a market Ford has already partly retreated from. Ford built the last {{ref:f150-lightning}} in December 2025 and has lost around $13 billion on its electric line since 2023. The Fathom is the answer to the problem CEO Jim Farley named when the Lightning ended: a $70,000 electric truck did not work.

At just under $30,000 delivered, the Fathom would undercut every electric pickup currently sold in the United States. General Motors has not announced an affordable compact or midsize electric truck, which leaves Slate's stripped-back compact pickup as the nearest low-price rival.

What is still unknown

  • What the truck looks like. Ford has released an animated teaser and nothing else
  • Battery capacity, range and efficiency
  • Peak DC charging power and charge curve
  • Motor outputs, and whether the launch configuration is rear- or all-wheel drive
  • Bed length, frunk volume, payload and towing capacity
  • Exterior dimensions and curb weight
  • The trim structure above the base model, and pricing for the longer-range pack
  • Whether the Fathom will be sold outside North America. Ford has confirmed the Universal EV platform will carry more than one vehicle, but has said nothing about European availability
