Rivian is an American electric vehicle manufacturer founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe, focused on building premium adventure-oriented electric trucks and SUVs. With the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, a massive commercial van partnership with Amazon, and the upcoming more affordable R2 platform, Rivian has established itself as one of the most significant EV startups to reach volume production.

Rivian's EV strategy combines adventure-ready capability with cutting-edge electric technology. The R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, built on Rivian's proprietary R1 platform, offer impressive off-road capability, up to 400+ miles of range, and innovative features like the R1T's gear tunnel storage compartment. The second-generation R1 vehicles launched in 2024 brought significant improvements including a new in-house dual-motor drivetrain, more efficient battery architecture, updated interior technology, and enhanced software capabilities.

The R2 platform represents Rivian's pivotal move toward the mass market. Announced in 2024, the R2 is a smaller, more affordable electric SUV starting around $45,000, designed to dramatically expand Rivian's addressable market. Built at Rivian's new manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois (with a planned second plant in Georgia), the R2 targets the high-volume midsize SUV segment. A performance variant and long-range RWD option are also planned.

Rivian's commercial vehicle division produces electric delivery vans (EDV) for Amazon, which has ordered 100,000 units as part of its Climate Pledge commitment. Thousands of these vans are already in operation across the United States, making Rivian one of the largest producers of commercial EVs in North America. This partnership provides Rivian with a steady revenue stream and valuable manufacturing scale.

Rivian has built its own Rivian Adventure Network of DC fast chargers along popular adventure routes and has since opened these chargers to other EV brands. The company also develops its own software stack, including a custom infotainment system, over-the-air update capability, and advanced driver assistance features. With a Volkswagen Group investment and technology partnership announced in 2024, Rivian's software and electrical architecture will also underpin future VW Group vehicles.
