Emergency Lane Keeping
Emergency Lane Keeping warns and briefly corrects the vehicle's path when an unintended departure creates imminent risk, unlike lane centering, which continuously controls lateral position.
What the system watches
A camera usually identifies lane markings and road edges. Other sensors and vehicle data can help determine:
- the vehicle's position and movement relative to the boundary;
- whether the turn signal suggests an intentional maneuver;
- whether another road user is in an adjacent lane;
- whether steering or braking can correct the path without creating greater risk.
The intervention may use steering, selective wheel braking or both. It should remain limited in duration and allow the driver to override it with deliberate control input.
Different departure risks
The label can cover several safety cases:
- crossing a visible lane marking into adjacent traffic;
- leaving the paved road;
- moving toward oncoming traffic;
- changing lanes toward an overtaking vehicle.
Not every vehicle supports every case. Performance can depend on speed, marking quality, road width, curvature, weather and sensor visibility.
Warning, correction and centering
Three related features behave differently:
- lane-departure warning alerts but does not steer;
- lane-keeping assist makes a corrective input after drift begins;
- lane-centering assist provides sustained steering control.
ELK describes the safety intervention and its triggering risk, not a promise of continuous guidance. The distinction matters because a driver should never rely on an emergency function to steer routinely.
Regulation
The EU General Safety Regulation requires emergency lane-keeping systems for applicable new passenger cars and vans under its implementation timetable. UN Regulation No. 178, which entered into force in February 2026, establishes harmonized approval provisions for ELK systems fitted to passenger cars and vans.
Regulation No. 178 recognizes that type-approval tests cannot represent every road and weather condition. Approval demonstrates performance against defined requirements, not universal collision avoidance.
Practical limitations
ELK may not intervene when markings are absent, the driver signals an intentional lane change, steering authority is limited or the vehicle cannot determine a safe correction. It can also produce an unwanted input when road geometry is ambiguous. Drivers should understand the warning symbol, activation speed, override behavior and conditions in which the system is unavailable.
