EV Claims, Checked examines recurring statements about battery-electric vehicles and tests them against the strongest available evidence. Each article gives a clear verdict, defines where it applies, and explains which conditions can change the answer.

How each claim is checked

Every article starts with a recognizable claim and narrows it to a question that can be tested. The review then identifies the relevant market, vehicle class, time period, technology, and comparison boundary before reaching a verdict.

The evidence review follows the same principles throughout the series:

  • Prefer regulators, safety authorities, official statistics, standards bodies, peer-reviewed research, and manufacturer technical documentation.
  • Separate measured facts, modeled results, manufacturer claims, reported findings, editorial inference, and remaining unknowns.
  • Compare vehicles that serve a similar purpose and use the same system boundary, test cycle, age, mileage, and market where possible.
  • Preserve the part of a claim that is supported before explaining what is missing, exaggerated, or contradicted.
  • State important limitations and give readers a practical conclusion they can apply to a purchase or ownership decision.

The purpose is to make the evidence and assumptions visible. The series is not a defence of EVs, and claims favourable to EVs receive the same scrutiny as critical claims.

Verdict scale

Each claim receives one of six verdicts after the evidence review:

  • Correct — the claim is supported within the stated scope.
  • Mostly correct — the central finding is supported, but common wording leaves out material limitations.
  • Context-dependent — the answer changes substantially with geography, vehicle, climate, use, time period, or comparison boundary.
  • Mostly incorrect — the claim contains a real observation but draws a conclusion the evidence does not support.
  • Incorrect — reliable evidence contradicts the claim in its stated form.
  • Insufficient evidence — the available evidence is too limited or inconsistent for a responsible verdict.

A claim may also be marked as outdated, but that note does not replace the evidence verdict. The verdict applies to the exact wording and scope shown in the article, not to every related argument.

Scope and comparison rules

Apparently conflicting answers can both be valid when they use different assumptions. Each claim article therefore states its scope and exposes the variables that materially affect the result.

Climate and electricity questions identify the country or grid mix and distinguish vehicle production, energy production, direct use, and full-lifecycle boundaries. Range and charging questions identify the test method, state-of-charge window, temperature, route, and charging conditions. Cost questions identify the market, prices, taxes, incentives, financing, mileage, charging mix, and ownership period.

Battery capacity, charging power, vehicle mass, safety statistics, and emissions data are kept within their defined meanings. A peak charging value is not treated as an average, a certified range is not presented as an independent road result, and one incident or vehicle is not used to establish a population-wide conclusion.

Corrections and review

Every claim article shows its scope and last-reviewed date. Evidence that changes quickly should be checked at least annually, and a review should also be triggered by material new regulator data, safety statistics, peer-reviewed research, standards, or market conditions.

If better evidence changes the conclusion, the article and verdict should change with it. The revised article should identify the updated scope, review date, evidence, and uncertainty rather than preserving an outdated conclusion. Suspected errors should be checked against the original source and corrected without changing unrelated content.
