OTA Update (Over-the-Air)
OTA (Over-the-Air) updates are wireless software updates delivered directly to an electric vehicle through its cellular or Wi-Fi connection, without requiring a physical visit to a dealership or service center.
How It Works
The vehicle periodically checks with the manufacturer's servers for available software updates. When an update is available, it downloads in the background while the car is parked and connected. The owner is notified and can choose when to install — typically while the car is parked overnight.
OTA updates can range from minor bug fixes and map updates to significant feature additions, user interface redesigns, and even powertrain performance improvements. Some manufacturers have used OTA updates to increase range, improve charging speed, add new driver assistance features, or unlock entirely new capabilities.
Why It Matters
OTA capability means an EV can genuinely improve after purchase — something unprecedented in the automotive industry before Tesla popularized the approach. Instead of the car slowly aging from the moment you buy it, OTA updates can make it better over time.
For buyers, OTA support is increasingly important: it means faster bug fixes, access to new features without dealer visits, and confidence that the car's software will stay current. However, the scope of OTA varies dramatically between manufacturers — some only update infotainment, while others can update the entire vehicle including drivetrain and ADAS.
