Home Charger (Wallbox)

A home charger, often called a wallbox, is Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) installed at a residence or an assigned parking space for regular vehicle charging. Most wallboxes provide controlled AC power, while the vehicle's Onboard Charger converts it to DC for the battery.

What a wallbox does

A home charger manages the electrical connection and communicates how much current the vehicle may draw. Depending on the product and installation, it can also provide protection, energy metering, scheduled charging, access control, connectivity, or coordination with a building's available electrical capacity.

A tethered wallbox has an attached vehicle cable. An untethered or socketed wallbox requires a separate cable. A portable cord set can also be EVSE for home charging, but it is not normally described as a wallbox.

The name charger is convenient but can hide where conversion occurs. With AC Charging, the wall unit supplies AC and the power electronics in the vehicle perform the main AC-to-DC conversion. A domestic socket and portable cord set, a wallbox, and a public AC post can all support AC charging without being the same equipment.

The wallbox rating alone does not determine charging speed. The circuit, supply phase, EVSE setting, cable, connector, onboard charger, and vehicle charging limits can each impose a lower limit. Installation requirements and protective devices also depend on local electrical rules and the property.
