Frunk (Front Trunk)

Last modified: Apr 04, 2026

A frunk (a portmanteau of "front" and "trunk") is a storage compartment located under the front hood of an electric vehicle, occupying space that would traditionally house an internal combustion engine.

How It Works

Because electric motors are far more compact than combustion engines and are typically mounted on or between the axles, the front of many EVs has unused space. Manufacturers can use this space for a sealed, weather-protected storage area accessible by opening the front hood.

Frunk sizes vary enormously — from small, shallow compartments that hold a charging cable and a few bags (30–50 liters) to large, deep compartments that can hold luggage or coolers (100–200+ liters). Some frunks include drain plugs, making them suitable for use as coolers or for carrying wet/dirty items.

Why It Matters

The frunk is a practical advantage unique to EVs. It provides additional cargo space beyond the rear trunk, and because it is separated from the passenger cabin, it is ideal for storing items you want to keep isolated — wet gear, groceries, smelly sports equipment, or charging cables.

Not all EVs have a usable frunk. Vehicles built on shared EV/ICE platforms often lack front storage space because the platform was designed to accommodate an engine. Dedicated EV platforms are more likely to offer generous frunks.

Common Values

  • Small frunk: 30–60 liters (typical for sedans)
  • Medium frunk: 60–100 liters
  • Large frunk: 100–200+ liters (trucks and some SUVs)
  • Notable frunks: Tesla Model Y (~117L), Ford F-150 Lightning (~400L), Rivian R1T (~314L)
