A charging-station reservation allocates a charging opportunity for a defined arrival window, subject to the operator's rules and the station's condition.

What charging-station reservation means

A charging-station reservation is a service that allocates a charge point, connector, or charging opportunity to a driver for a defined arrival window. It can reduce uncertainty at busy sites by preventing another supported session from starting on the reserved resource during that period.

Reservations may be offered through a charging-network app, an e-mobility service provider, or an integrated vehicle route planner. The precise object being reserved and the rules for arrival, cancellation, fees, and expiry depend on the operator and service.

Limits of a reservation

A reservation does not necessarily reserve a parking space under local law, guarantee that another vehicle has not blocked the bay, or prove that the charger will remain operational. It also does not guarantee a particular charging power, because vehicle limits, temperature, shared site capacity, and equipment state can still affect the session.

The service requires coordination between customer-facing systems and charging infrastructure. OCPP includes mechanisms that charging-station management systems can use to communicate reservation-related actions with compatible stations, but actual availability remains an operator feature rather than a universal capability.
