Charging Network Roaming
Charging-network roaming can let one service relationship provide access to chargers operated by several networks.
What charging-network roaming means
Charging-network roaming, or e-roaming, lets an EV driver use charging points operated by one organization through a service relationship held with another. The participating organizations exchange the information needed for authorization, session records, tariffs, and billing rather than requiring the driver to create a separate account with every charge point operator.
Roaming can make a charging card or app usable across several networks, but coverage depends on commercial agreements and technical integration. A logo in an app therefore does not guarantee that every charger, connector, tariff, or feature on the underlying network is available.
What roaming does not guarantee
Roaming concerns service access and data exchange. It does not make an incompatible plug fit, increase charging power, reserve a working charger, or ensure identical prices across providers. Drivers may also be able to pay ad hoc without a subscription; ad-hoc payment and roaming are related access options, not synonyms.
Protocols such as OCPI can support information exchange between roaming parties, while regulations such as the EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation set requirements for public charging access and price transparency in covered markets.
