Boost Converter

Last modified: Aug 02, 2026

A boost converter is a step-up DC/DC power converter that raises a DC input voltage to a higher DC output voltage.

What it means in an EV

In an EV, a boost function may bridge a voltage mismatch during DC Fast Charging. It can let a higher-voltage Battery Pack & Configuration accept power from a lower-voltage DC charger by raising the incoming voltage before it reaches the pack. The converter's power and current limits still constrain charging, so voltage conversion alone does not guarantee a specific charging speed.

Vehicle makers can implement the function with dedicated hardware, reuse other traction power electronics, or choose an architecture that avoids a separate booster. The term therefore describes the voltage-raising function, not one universal vehicle component.

A boost converter is a type of DC-to-DC Converter. It is not the Onboard Charger (OBC), whose primary charging role is converting external AC power to DC.
