Coasting

Coasting is vehicle motion with little or no commanded propulsion or regenerative torque when the driver eases off the accelerator.

Why it can save energy

When the vehicle does not need to slow, retaining kinetic energy is normally more efficient than converting it to electricity and later back to motion. Coasting still includes aerodynamic drag, tyre losses, bearing losses, and any residual drivetrain drag.

Coasting does not necessarily mean selecting neutral or mechanically disconnecting the motor. It can be a controlled torque state in Drive. If the vehicle must slow, regeneration is usually preferable to discarding the same energy entirely as friction-brake heat. Regenerative braking lift-off regeneration

Drivers should still choose a mode that provides predictable speed control for the gradient, traffic, and road conditions.
