Torque

Last modified: Aug 02, 2026

Torque is the turning moment produced at a shaft, axle, or wheel. It is normally measured in newton-metres (N·m) and describes rotational force, not how quickly work is being done.

Torque in an EV

An electric motor can produce substantial torque from zero speed, which helps an EV respond immediately. Power still remains zero at standstill because the shaft is not rotating. As speed rises, torque and rotational speed together determine power.

A reduction gear multiplies torque between the motor and axle while reducing speed. Wheel torque therefore cannot be compared directly with motor torque unless the gear ratio, driveline losses, and measurement point are known. Electric Motors and Drive Units

Tyre radius converts wheel torque into tractive force at the road, while available grip limits how much of that force can accelerate the vehicle.
