Submarining
Last modified: Aug 05, 2026
Submarining occurs when an occupant moves downward and forward beneath the lap belt during a crash, allowing the belt to leave the pelvis and load the abdomen. This can raise injury risk because soft abdominal tissue replaces strong pelvic bones as the load-bearing area.
Reducing the risk
A snug lap belt low across the hips and an upright posture help maintain correct engagement. See Seat Belts and Safety Testing.
