Seat Ventilation and Active Seat Cooling
Seat ventilation and active seat cooling are different forms of local seat climate control: ventilation moves air through or along the seat, while active cooling adds a stage that lowers the temperature of the supplied air or seat surface.
Main forms
- Seat ventilation uses one or more blowers to push cabin air toward the occupant or pull warm, humid air away through a perforated cover and internal distribution layer. Air movement can improve evaporation and reduce trapped heat, but ventilation alone does not chill its source air.
- Active seat cooling uses an additional cooling device rather than air movement alone. A thermoelectric heat pump is one implementation: it cools air before a blower distributes it through the cushion or backrest.
How the terms differ
Both systems may have fans, perforated upholstery, ducts, and several control levels. The decisive question is whether the seat only moves available cabin air or actively removes heat from the air or surface.
Names such as cooled seat, climate-controlled seat, and seat ventilation are not used consistently across manufacturers. Perforated upholstery alone proves neither ventilation nor active cooling. The owner's manual or technical description should identify whether the feature uses blowers only, a thermoelectric stage, or cooled air from the main climate system.
Comfort and energy use depend on upholstery, airflow, cabin temperature and humidity, occupant contact, control setting, and the cooling technology. Neither label establishes a universal efficiency or range benefit.
