Radiant, Contact, and Local Cabin Heating

Radiant, contact, and local cabin heating are occupant-focused ways to provide warmth near or directly to people instead of relying only on heating all the cabin air.

Main forms

  • Radiant heating transfers heat across a gap by thermal radiation. A warm panel can therefore heat an exposed part of the occupant, such as the lower legs, without touching it.
  • Contact heating transfers heat by conduction where the occupant touches a warm surface. Heated seats, steering wheels, armrests, and similar surfaces use this boundary.
  • Local or zonal heating describes where comfort is targeted, not one heat-transfer mechanism. It can combine radiant panels, contact heaters, and directed warm air around one occupied position or body region.

How the terms differ

Radiant and contact heating describe how heat reaches the occupant. Local heating describes the limited area or person being conditioned. A contact heater is usually local, but a local footwell air heater is mainly convective, and a radiant panel does not need physical contact.

These systems can shorten the time before an occupant feels warm and may let the central climate system use a lower setting in some conditions. They do not replace the airflow and humidity control needed to keep the glass clear, and they do not establish a fixed energy or range benefit. The result depends on the occupied seats, heater locations, control strategy, weather, cabin target, and trip duration.
