Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
Lane departure warning (LDW) alerts the driver when the vehicle appears to drift out of its lane without an intentional lane-change signal. A forward-facing camera usually tracks visible lane markings and compares the vehicle’s position with the lane boundaries.
What it does
When the vehicle approaches or crosses a detected marking, LDW can give a visual, audible, or haptic alert, such as a vibration in the steering wheel. It does not steer the vehicle back into the lane. Lane keeping assist is the related feature that may add a brief corrective steering or braking input.
LDW depends on being able to identify the road geometry. Faded or temporary markings, snow, heavy rain, glare, roadworks, sharp curves, and low camera visibility can limit or disable it. Turn-signal use and system settings also affect when warnings occur. The driver remains responsible for lane position at all times.
