Demisting, Defogging, Defrosting, and Dehumidification

Demisting, defogging, defrosting, and dehumidification are related visibility and moisture-control functions, but they are not interchangeable in every context. The key physical distinction is whether moisture has condensed inside the glass or frozen on its exterior.

Demisting and defogging

Demisting and defogging commonly describe removing the film of condensed water droplets from the inside surface of a windscreen or window. The preferred word varies by region, regulation, and manufacturer. Current EU technical requirements use demisting for interior mist, while the US standard groups windshield defrosting and defogging under one safety standard. These legal texts have defined scopes and test procedures; their terminology should not be treated as a universal naming rule. The vehicle can restore visibility by directing air to the glass and changing the conditions that caused condensation. Warmer glass, drier air, increased airflow, and outside-air intake can all help, depending on system design and conditions.

Defrosting

In a strict technical sense, defrosting concerns frost or ice on the exterior surface. Heat can loosen or melt it so the wipers or driver can clear the glass. Owner-facing controls may combine functions under one symbol or label. Tesla, for example, uses successive windshield-control states called defog and defrost, and separately offers a vehicle defrost function for snow, ice, and frost. Rear-window “defrost” often uses electrical heating elements in the glass rather than HVAC airflow. Equipment and operating logic vary by vehicle.

Dehumidification

Dehumidification removes water from cabin air. In an air-conditioning system, moisture can condense on a cold evaporator and drain beneath the vehicle. The resulting drier air can then be directed to the glass, with reheating where the design calls for it.
