Camping Mode

Last modified: Aug 05, 2026

Camping mode is a named parked-vehicle state designed for people remaining in or around the vehicle, often with cabin climate and selected electrical or comfort functions kept available. It is one form of Stationary Climate Control, but the name does not define a standard set of features.

What it can include

Tesla's Model 3 Camp Mode maintains cabin temperature and keeps the touchscreen, USB ports, and low-voltage outlet available; it also changes alarm and walk-away locking behaviour. Rivian's Camp Mode instead presents several parked settings, including Stay On and Stay Off, and can add outlet timers, display control, courtesy settings, exterior lighting, and suspension levelling. These are product-specific examples, not requirements for every camping mode. Tesla Model 3 owner's manual: Camp Mode Rivian: Camp Mode

What to check

A camping-mode specification should be read together with the exact owner manual. Check:

  • how long the mode can run and what ends it;
  • the minimum battery level and estimated energy use;
  • whether climate, screens, media, USB ports, and higher-power outlets remain available;
  • how locks, alarms, exterior lights, and proximity features behave;
  • whether the app can monitor or control the mode.

Camping mode differs from Cabin Preconditioning, which prepares the cabin for a later departure rather than maintaining an occupied parked state. For the underlying climate and energy system, see Climate systems in electric vehicles.
