Augmented-Reality Head-Up Display

An augmented-reality head-up display (AR-HUD) projects graphics that appear aligned with parts of the road scene, such as a turn, lane boundary, lead vehicle, or hazard. It extends a conventional HUD by using a larger apparent image and scene-relative placement.

How alignment works

The system combines vehicle position, map data, cameras or other sensors, calibration, and a graphics pipeline. It continually adjusts the overlay for vehicle motion and the driver's expected viewpoint. The image is still produced by display optics; it is not physically painted onto the road.

Limits and design

Accurate registration is difficult when the road geometry, location estimate, sensor interpretation, windshield, or calibration is imperfect. Graphics can lag, drift, or appear at the wrong depth. For this reason, overlays should be restrained and should not hide pedestrians, signs, or other important detail.

AR-HUD is a display and guidance aid, not proof that the vehicle has detected every object or can drive itself. Content, supported functions, apparent image distance, and usable eye box differ by model.
