Night Vision

Automotive night vision uses infrared sensing to help reveal pedestrians, animals, or other supported objects beyond or outside the clearest part of the headlight beam. The image or highlighted warning appears in the instrument display or head-up display.

What it does

Passive thermal systems detect heat differences, while active systems illuminate the scene with near-infrared light and capture the reflection. Image processing may identify supported road users and mark a possible hazard. Night vision supplements the driver’s view; it does not replace headlights or normal observation.

Detection range and classification vary. Ambient temperature, rain, fog, snow, dirt, road geometry, cold objects, reflective materials, and sensor placement can reduce performance. Looking at the display for too long also creates distraction. The driver must choose a speed that allows stopping within the visible road and respond based on the real scene.
