Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Interior Off-Gassing

Last modified: Aug 05, 2026

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are carbon-based chemicals that evaporate into cabin air from materials, coatings, adhesives and other sources; interior off-gassing is the release process, while VOC is a broad chemical category, not one health rating. Heat and time can change emissions, results depend on the stated sampling and analysis method, and component and whole-vehicle tests answer different questions; see Interior Materials, Air Quality, and Circularity.
