Visual–Manual Driver Distraction
Last modified: Aug 05, 2026
Visual–manual driver distraction occurs when a secondary task draws the driver's eyes from the road and requires hand operation. It describes interaction demand, not control technology alone: a physical button can start a complex sequence while a direct screen action may be brief; NHTSA evaluates complete tasks and glance behaviour, and the safest access path depends on context, feedback and workload; see Cockpit Design.
