Vehicle Companion App
A vehicle companion app is a manufacturer-authorized phone or tablet application that lets a user view vehicle information or request remote actions. It normally communicates through a cloud backend and the car's telematics connection rather than directly over long distances.
Typical functions
Functions can include charging status and limits, preconditioning, lock control, vehicle location, trip or energy data, service messages, route transfer, digital-key setup, parked-camera viewing, and software-update information. Availability varies by model, region, account role, subscription, connectivity, and vehicle state.
Security and ownership
Remote control makes the account security-sensitive. Use strong authentication, protect account recovery channels, review shared-driver permissions, and remove previous users. When ownership changes, both the app account and data stored in the vehicle should be reset through the manufacturer's documented process.
An app is not guaranteed to work whenever the car is offline, asleep, in a low-power state, or beyond its supported service period. Tesla's documentation, for example, states that both the phone and vehicle need cellular connectivity for mobile access. Tesla App Support
