VDA 211 Luggage-Volume Standard
VDA 211 is a method for expressing usable luggage-compartment volume by packing standardized rectangular blocks into the available space. Each block measures 200 × 100 × 50 mm and represents one litre.
What the number represents
The reported volume is the number of blocks that fit under the method's loading boundaries. Because rigid blocks must be physically accommodated, the result reflects usable shape rather than a simple geometric calculation of every cavity.
The figure still depends on the tested configuration. Seat position, seatback angle, adjustable cargo floors, parcel shelves, load covers, and whether space above a prescribed boundary is included can change the result. Front trunks and underfloor compartments may also be reported separately.
VDA litres are not automatically comparable with a value produced under SAE J1100 or with a manufacturer's own liquid-volume calculation. Even two VDA figures need matching seating and loading conditions. Look for separate values behind the rear seats, with seats folded, and to the roof where applicable.
