Ultra-Wideband (UWB)

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is a short-range radio technology that can measure the distance and relative position between compatible devices with high precision.

Its role in a digital key

In a vehicle-access system, UWB can use signal travel time to verify that an authenticated phone or wearable is physically close to a particular part of the vehicle. This supports hands-free unlocking and helps resist relay attacks that make a distant credential appear nearby.

UWB is only one layer of the system. In the CCC Digital Key architecture, Bluetooth Low Energy supports communication and authentication, while UWB adds secure ranging. NFC can provide close-range tap access and a battery-low mode. Having UWB hardware does not by itself make a phone or vehicle compatible with a particular key.

Support depends on the exact vehicle equipment, mobile device, antenna layout, software, and regional radio approvals.
