Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
Traffic sign recognition (TSR) identifies supported road signs and presents their meaning to the driver, commonly including the current speed limit. A forward camera reads visible signs, while some systems also use navigation-map data.
What it does
Image processing classifies a detected sign and determines whether it applies to the vehicle. The result can appear in the instrument display or head-up display and may support speed-limit warnings or other assistance functions. TSR is not the same as an intelligent speed limiter: recognition provides information, while a limiter can influence vehicle speed.
Dirty or obscured signs, temporary signs, supplementary plates, unusual formats, poor weather, glare, roadworks, and outdated map data can produce a missed or incorrect result. Coverage differs by country and vehicle. The driver must follow actual signs and road rules rather than rely only on the display.
