Telematics

Telematics is the combination of vehicle data processing and telecommunications used to exchange information between a car and external systems. A telematics control unit commonly combines a cellular modem, positioning, security hardware, and interfaces to vehicle networks.

What it supports

Telematics can provide emergency calling, remote status, charging information, preconditioning, diagnostics, stolen-vehicle services, traffic or map data, fleet functions, and software-download coordination. The same unit does not necessarily deliver every connected feature, and safety-regulated functions can be separated from commercial services.

Ownership considerations

Operation can depend on mobile coverage, roaming agreements, backend availability, account status, subscriptions, modem compatibility, and the manufacturer's support period. Telematics also processes sensitive information such as location, identifiers, and usage events, so access controls, consent, retention, deletion, and privacy settings matter.

Telematics is the communications foundation; a connected service is a user-facing or operational function built on that foundation.
