Smart Charging

Smart charging is controlled EV charging that changes when or how quickly a vehicle charges in response to information, limits, or an operating objective.

What makes charging smart

Connectivity alone does not make a charger smart. A smart-charging function acts on a rule or input while protecting the driver's required departure time and energy target. The control may run in the vehicle, EVSE, charging backend, site energy-management system, or across several of them.

Common objectives include:

  • Delaying charging to a chosen or off-peak period
  • Keeping a home, workplace, or depot within its electrical capacity
  • Using more onsite solar generation
  • Prioritizing fleet vehicles by route and departure need
  • Responding to variable prices, a demand-response event, or a grid constraint

Scheduled Charging uses predetermined time windows. Load Balancing distributes a limited electrical capacity, and can respond to the site's changing non-EV demand. More advanced optimization may combine these functions with state of charge, required energy, tariffs, local generation, or an external request.

Important boundary

Smart charging is usually unidirectional: electricity continues to flow into the battery while timing or power changes. It does not imply Bidirectional Charging, vehicle-to-home, or vehicle-to-grid capability.

It also does not guarantee participation in a utility program. The vehicle, EVSE, software, protocol functions, metering, tariff or market rules, and operator agreement must support the complete service. Drivers need a clear override, and loss of communication should lead to a defined charging fallback.
