Single-, Dual-, Triple-, and Quad-Motor Drivetrains

Single-, dual-, triple-, and quad-motor drivetrains classify an EV by the number of traction motors that can propel it.

Main forms

  • Single-motor: one motor normally drives one axle through reduction gearing and a differential. The driven axle may be the front, as in Front-Wheel Drive (FWD), or the rear, as in Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD).
  • Dual-motor: two motors may drive separate axles to provide All-Wheel Drive (AWD), but other layouts can place both motors on one axle or combine them through shared gearing.
  • Triple-motor: three motors often mean one motor on one axle and two on the other, although the name alone does not establish that each paired motor drives one wheel independently.
  • Quad-motor: four motors can provide one motor per wheel, but they may instead be packaged as two motors within each axle drive unit.

What the count does not tell you

Motor count does not by itself establish driven-wheel layout, torque vectoring, redundancy, system output, or efficiency. Gear paths, clutches, inverter channels, control software, battery power, and tyre grip determine what the vehicle can actually do. Combined motor ratings also may not equal the vehicle’s available system power.
