SAE J1100 Cargo-Volume Standard
SAE J1100 is a recommended practice that defines standardized vehicle dimensions and procedures for estimating cargo and luggage volume. It is widely encountered in North American specifications.
How cargo volume is characterized
The practice distinguishes vehicle and compartment configurations rather than treating every cargo area as a simple liquid-filled box. Closed luggage compartments can be evaluated with standardized simulated luggage pieces, while open cargo areas use defined dimensional procedures. The stated value therefore represents the method, boundaries, and vehicle configuration—not every small void in the body.
Seat positions, seatback angles, cargo covers, and whether volume is measured behind a particular seating row can change the published result. Manufacturers may also state several SAE-based values for different interior arrangements.
An SAE J1100 figure should not be compared directly with VDA block litres unless the methodological difference is made clear. A larger number can result from the standard and loading boundary rather than a genuinely more useful space.
