Real-World Range
Real-world range is the distance an EV can cover in actual use under stated conditions, rather than the result of one standardized laboratory test.
Why it is not one fixed number
Available battery energy and energy consumption both matter. Speed, air temperature, cabin heating or cooling, wind, rain, elevation, traffic, payload, tyres, road surface, and battery temperature can all change consumption. The starting state of charge and the reserve left at the destination also change the distance a driver can use.
A real-world range figure is meaningful only when its conditions and method are clear. A controlled road test may report distance from a defined starting charge to a defined end point. Owner data may average many trips but combine different routes, seasons, driving styles, and battery states. A route prediction is an estimate, not a completed measurement.
Real-world range should not be treated as a replacement certification rating. WLTP, EPA, and CLTC results use prescribed procedures that support comparisons within the same test system. Road results answer a different question and should be compared only when speed, temperature, route, battery use, and reserve are sufficiently similar.
