Optimal Travel Speed for an EV
The optimal travel speed for an EV is the road speed that minimizes a defined objective, such as energy use or total trip time, under stated conditions.
There is no universal best speed
For minimum energy per kilometre on level road, lower speed reduces aerodynamic drag, but auxiliary loads continue to consume energy over time and the practical optimum can depend on temperature, wind, road load, and vehicle efficiency. Traffic rules, safety, and the route always set the usable boundary.
For minimum journey time on a trip that needs fast charging, driving faster saves road time but usually raises consumption and charging time. The time-optimal speed depends on the vehicle’s consumption curve, usable battery energy, charging curve, charger power and placement, detours, stops, weather, and desired reserve. A faster-charging vehicle or charger can shift that balance.
An “optimal speed” therefore needs its objective and assumptions. A speed that maximizes range is not necessarily the speed that reaches a distant destination soonest, and neither is a recommendation to exceed a safe or legal speed.
