Occupant Restraint System

Last modified: Aug 05, 2026

An occupant restraint system coordinates seat belts, airbags, seats, head restraints and control logic to manage occupant movement during a crash. Belts position and restrain the body, while airbags add cushioning in impacts; performance depends on seating position and preserved cabin space.

Coordination

Modern systems may also use pretensioners and load limiters to coordinate belt force with occupant motion. See Seat Belts, Airbags and Safety Testing for deeper coverage.
