Occupant Monitoring System
An occupant monitoring system (OMS) detects or classifies people inside a vehicle and supports safety functions associated with their presence, position, or condition.
Wider than driver monitoring
An OMS may combine seat and belt signals with cabin cameras, radar, pressure sensing, or other direct sensing. Depending on the implementation, it can support seat-belt reminders, passenger-airbag control, occupant-size classification, out-of-position warnings, crash occupancy information, or child-presence alerts.
This is broader than a driver monitoring system (DMS), which concentrates on whether the driver appears attentive, present, and ready to supervise. The two functions can share an interior camera or processor, but the names do not describe the same assessment.
Capabilities vary by seating position and hardware. A system that detects a buckled belt does not necessarily detect a living occupant, and camera-based classification has different limits from direct sensing of movement, breathing, or heartbeat.
