Occupant Detection, Classification, and Airbag Suppression
Last modified: Aug 05, 2026
Occupant detection determines whether a seat is occupied; classification estimates occupant size or category. Airbag suppression prevents a selected cushion from deploying.
How the decision is made
Seat-weight sensors, belt signals, cameras, or other sensing may inform the decision. Misclassification can produce an unexpected passenger-airbag indicator, so loading, posture, and child restraints matter. This function is narrower than a general Occupant Monitoring System. See Airbags.
