Near Field Communication (NFC)

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a very short-range wireless technology that exchanges data when compatible devices are brought close together.

Its role in vehicle access

An NFC digital key normally requires a deliberate tap or close presentation of a phone, watch, or smart card to a reader in the door area. A second reader may authorize starting. The short operating range provides a clear user action and does not rely on broad proximity detection.

CCC Digital Key uses NFC for tap-based access and retains it alongside Bluetooth Low Energy and UWB. Supported implementations can allow access in a phone's battery-reserve mode, but behaviour depends on the device, operating system, credential, and vehicle. NFC support for payment or phone pairing does not automatically mean the same device supports that vehicle's digital key.

NFC is not the hands-free ranging layer. Systems that unlock while the phone remains in a pocket generally use other radios for discovery and distance awareness. See Digital Keys for how the technologies complement one another.
