Multi-Link Suspension

Last modified: Aug 03, 2026

Multi-link suspension locates a wheel with several separate links rather than one or two large control arms.

What the layout changes

Each link constrains part of the wheel carrier’s motion. By choosing the link positions and bushing stiffness, engineers can tune camber, toe, steering-axis geometry, packaging, and compliance response with more freedom than many simpler layouts.

“Multi-link” does not identify one universal geometry or a fixed number of links. The term covers different front and rear designs, and the spring or damper may be mounted separately from the locating links. More joints can also add cost, packaging demands, and service points.

For the physical suspension families, see Suspension Construction. The resulting wheel paths and alignment changes are explained in Suspension Kinematics and Vehicle Dynamics.
